The Kommandeurswagen or Type 87 was a version of the standard Beetle that was upgraded for use in the desert by the Afrika Korps. It was fitted with 4 wheel drive and had chunky tires and upgraded suspension to handle off road driving and the desert sand. It was developed specifically as a staff car for high-ranking officers and around 600 of these were sent to North Africa. Rommel was supposedly a fan of the car and requested more be shipped out but the limited production meant the original ones supplied were the only ones made.
The model is another Rio 1:43 model showing the car in use as a Afrika Corps command vehicle. Picture 4 shows the real thing where the off road tires a quite evident. I am thinking there is not much clearance between the tire and the fender for off road use but I guess it did the job.
Can't go wrong 2ith Afrika Korps.
