We recently purchased this set of six small lidded cream cups from Dorita Ferrari for $15. They had been on sale for at least ten years, apparently because local buyers here tend to dismiss pieces that look “imperfect”: they are different, clearly hand made and hand decorated, and their intended use is not obvious.
This context is important: many objects that appear flawed or irregular are often among the oldest examples, and their apparent imperfections can be evidence of early, artisanal manufacture rather than poor quality.
    Description of the set
The group comprises six pots à crème with fitted lids. Each cup has a bulbous, sinuous body on a short circular foot, an ear shaped handle, and a slightly domed lid topped by a modeled rosebud finial. The hand painted polychrome decoration shows floral sprays (roses, pansies, buds) with delicate green foliage; rims and handles are finished with a fine red/pink line.
    Attribution and dating
The bases bear the painted monogram VP under the glaze, corresponding to Veuve Perrin. The style, glaze quality, and decoration are consistent with an authentic 18th century Marseille production, dated with confidence to circa 1750–1794.
    Conclusion
Although these cups were long overlooked locally because they look irregular and their function is not immediately clear, their hand made character and the VP mark indicate genuine age and artisanal value. Their completeness as a set of six and good state of preservation increase their interest to collectors.
