    W. D. Hunt of Scott, New York was issued Patent No. 67,177 for barbed wire on July 23, 1867. His claim for a fence with a series of spur-wheels was the subject of litigation for many years. His patent was subsequently sold to another and this variation(top photo) was a departure from his original patent (bottom photo) that stated "the barbs may be held in place by means of flanges or otherwise".

ttomtucker - Just noticed your comment. Yes, I have been to the LaCrosse museum many times. I am a member of the Antique Barbed Wire Society. Our meetings are held at the museum. There is also a Barbed Wire Museum on Route 66 in McClean, TX.
