I think both of these bowls are really beautiful. they were part of that bunch of stuff i got for $5 at Urban Ore yesterday. I wish i knew more about Chinese ceramics. there were quite a few pieces i passed up yesterday, but the two i got i like a lot.

So are these quite brightly coloured flowers typical of Tongzhi?
I have seen this style before and love it.

      Dear HO2 & Racer,
These are "made for export", probably correct 20C. They are not Tongzhi, that refers to a period during the Qing dynasty. The design is similar to those found on Tongzhi period pieces called Tazas, referring to the footed design etc. I will show you some soon as I have collected several from the 18C. They are quite interesting and can be quite pricy. But there are also many fakes that are passed on as real. You both have good taste. They make beautiful additions to any setting I think. Regards, Kirk

Thanks Kirk for your knowledge share.
As you may know I have an interest in Asian art but am constantly shown my ignorance. Ceramics in particular are a minefield for me!

      Dear Racer,
Please don't be hard on yourself. This is a very difficult area of ceramics to become knowledgeable in, it takes a commitment, as it is so vast with so many dynasties and periods to understand, very complex, but also addictive. Respectfully, Kirk

thank you Kirk and Karen! great info! i forgot to mention that both of these bowls were so dirty when i got them that you could barely see any of the color. i used toilet bowl cleaner to clean off the grime and was amazed at the results!
