Pottery Opossum Made From Ash
My sister and I went to an estate sale today. As usual I ended up buying stuff for myself. I found this little opossum. It's a pottery piece made with volcanic ash and has a signature that says"Stan".
NOT IMPOSSIBLE IT'S OPOSSUM
Ohh the debate..opossum or possum...depends on where you live.
"Opossums and possums are different animals. Opossums live in North and South America, while possums live in Australia and other countries."
STAN
Stan Langtwait, was a logger. He created pieces from 1950s to 1980 in his studio Shapes of Clay pottery in Graham Washington. He used volcanic ash and clay.
Still researching but several sites claim that he died in 1980, which is interesting since that's when Mt. St. Helens erupted. I did find another site that claims he died in 1984.

Very cool opossum Dave!! In Kentucky, our definition of an opossum is an animal that likes to sleep in the middle of the road:)

Bill - Thank you for the information. Funny when I picked it up at the estate sale, my sister thought it looked like volcanic ash. When I got home I was comparing it to my other known piece and wasn't sure.
Been too busy and hadn't got around to researching any further. I will update the post. Graham, WA. is just south of me as I live in south hill Puyallup.

Thanks again Bill. We are directly north of Mt St Helens by about 160 miles..I'm glad the ash cloud went north-east. But it was still a traumatic experience and the amount of ash was unbelievable. I remember the day got dark very fast.
