The earliest known comic character, Alexander "Ally" Sloper, F.O.M. (Friend of Man) made his debut in the August 14, 1867 issue of Judy magazine.
Starting in the late 1890s, readers were awarded “a wonder-working token” of membership in the Sloper’s Club after sending in twelve (later six) coupons from consecutive issues of the comic paper Ally Sloper’s Half-Holiday. By 1899, the publisher, Gilbert Dalziel, was claiming 10,154 members of the club, then 28,567 by 1903, and 38,609 by 1906. The serial number of this particular token, 20,438, dates it to be in the region of 1902.
