This trunk was a mess when I found it - my husband removed the thick canvas and sanded the wood underneath. The grain is gorgeous - I think I need a bigger house due to my love of trunks.
This trunk came from an old barn in Western Mass - love finding treasures like this one. Nice decorative Victorian Lock

Can you see any patent marks on the hardware? Hard to tell from the pic. Fancy lock! surprising with a more common latch. Lovely refinish job. Thanks for the post. I love looking and learning from others.
great thing also about your trunk is you don't have to pull it away from the wall to open it do to the style of the trunk ..very nice
I looked for some patent dates, but didn't see any - and it was funny, when I found this in my friends barn, we had no idea it was a wall trunk until we opened it - the latches are on the top rather than that fancy hinge I have see Clinton Wall Trunk Co. use. Thanks for comments - best, Kaye

Hello blunderbuss2, after sanding, I did one coat of Minwax Golden Oak, then I waited till completely absorbed and dry - next day, did coat of Tung Oil, then two coats with a brush of Satin Poly. In 20 years of refinishing trunks, each trunk is always a bit different. this one the finish came out almost perfect, the wood so incredibly smooth - not all my trunks come out like this one.
I aspire to just kind of run into a wall trunk one day. Sort of similar to hitting lotto! In my book anyway. I'm a bit green invade you couldn't tell.
I've had troubles in the past with tung oil as it takes so much time to dry (boiled or not). Usually end out wiping down with a thinner when I get impatient & that's a problem in such things as corners, reliefs etc. If the wood is really thirsty, it's not so bad. Quit using boiled especially & cut it with a thinner/drying agent. You have a secret? I live in the tropics so learned to avoid using a lot of paints & finishes when it is humid (often). Some of them will NEVER dry if used while raining. Minwax seems to be the most forgiving in my experience.
The lock on this trunk is in the "EastLake" style -- very nice. Looks like an 1890's era trunk. Beautiful.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. Cutting down tong oil, I've found agents like blushing seem to work most regularly but such things as 333 are expensive. (Found a worker using it once to clean $3 brushes!). Fired! I was really hoping you could teach an old dog new tricks.
Will post pics tomorrow of a new trunk that I just came across - can't believe it - my favorites of favorits - an Oak Slat Trunk. This gentleman found it on Cape Cod this summer and was going to give it to his son - guess then son said no thanks and he offered it to me. I pick it up tomorrow - have only had 3 in my 20 years of collecting.
Personally, I would never use a pure oil of any variety as a finish. For the oiled finish look in general I would always opt for a mix of oil and varnish, being sure to wipe off all excess much as I would with oil. Very hard to tell the difference in appearance between oil/varnish mix and pure oil, but the oil/varnish is longer lasting and more protective. It is also just as easy to renew when the finish crystalizes and becomes dry looking.
I have from time to time played with a japan drier...but there are so many J D's out there and they all work different and some not at all...
WWalker. We could form our own forum dealing with wood finishing etc. or take the easy route of joining an existing one. For sealing hard red woods, I often use French polish (1/3 unboiled tung oil, 2/3 turpentine) but every project seems to require decisions. Try that carnauba wax. If not happy, it's easy to remove.
