Another little goodie for my completely unplanned box collection from the "Volunteer's of America" thrift store. Made by the Rockford Silver Plate Co. sometime between 1882 and 1924. So I guess it could be called late Victorian. It was really tarnished but a light cleaning brought back some of the luster. I don't mind a little age showing and it highlights the engraving. It's quite heavy and measures 11" L x 4" W x 3 1/2" T. sitting on little bun feet. A bit of a dimple and scratches on the lid but not too bad. Although it's quadruple plated I don't think it's too valuable at least not for it's silver content. -Mike-
History of Racine/Rockford Silver Plate Co.
Courtesy of www.racinehistory.com
Racine Silver Plate Company was located on the northeast corner of Second and Main Streets in Racine ,Wisconsin. Then came the fire of May 5,1882, that destroyed seven square blocks of Downtown Racine. Attempts were made to move Racine Silver Plates’ materials to a safe uptown location, but the fire spread too rapidly. In the end, all that remained of the business was a few walls, smokestack and piles of melted silver.
The company wasn’t rebuilt in Racine. The city of Rockford, Ill. wooed its owners to rebuild there and the name was changed to "Rockford Silver Plate Co," Bought in 1925 by Raymond Sheets who changed the name to "Sheets / Rockford Silver Plate Co. they remained in business until 1956. Today the high quality products that were manufactured by Racine Silver Plate Co. are highly prized by collectors .
Gorgeous.... I hope it was a steal.
Thanks Aim ....... Not too bad only 3 Mr. Lincolns...lol
3 fins ain't too bad ;)
Don't you just looove owning something that was created sooo long ago. LoL
Yes I sure do, .....I'm in awe every time I pick up my 1780 Chinese bowl. Our country was only 4 years old. George Washington and Ben Franklin and most of the founding fathers were still alive ! Incredible ! It would have been something only the wealthy could afford. Maybe even owned by someone of importance. Wish I knew, but that is something lost in time !
I would call it a glove box, not jewelry box.
Thanks for the info davyd286......That would account for it's dimensions. I've never seen that term used with these before . They're always described as jewelry boxes or caskets. Nice to know. -Mike-
