I bought this funky carved gourd years ago at a flea market It appears old but I am not sure what it was used for or when it was made ..with a magnifying glass I see numbers in pencil but cannot not decipher nor make sense of them ..its 5-6 inches high thanks

OK, giving you a love for one reason. I use to tinker with gourds long ago. I didn't carve them I used a wood burner with a quill tip to make my design. Actually it was a pain because you had to wait for it to dry. It was a quite popular hobby 30 years ago. Everyone was growing gourds and going to get rich. Paint them, carve them, burn them. They were all basically worth the same. But they are fun and you can always throw them at someone you don't like.

i think that this is from central america - panama, costa rica, guate, honduras? they were used to transport liquids. it probably had a leaf plug of some sort and maybe a cord to hang it over the shoulder - like a canteen - which it is, in a sense.
