About 2 months ago I bought this Coke palm push and it looked alot different. Yes the Palm push in picture four is what it looked like before!
This is what a proper restoration looks like, you take an old beat up sign and make it look brand new just like it did back in the 1930's. Almost looks like my buddy used a time machine and reversed all the damaged that was ever done to this sign LOL. Some collectors dont like when this is done because now the character of the sign is gone, but I think when a sign is damage as bad as this one was its worth restoring. Now this sign can be enjoyed for many more years and still has a story behind it.
Wow, really nice job Trev, a real pro. I agree. When a sign's that far gone, bringing it back to live is the right thing to do. Well done! Looks great.
Thanks alot Dave I am really really happy with how good of job my buddy did on this sign. He told me it took alot of work and I would totally agree. I cant believe how good this sign looks now I will enjoy it for many more years!
fifties50s, I would not try to pass this sign off as a total original if I were to ever sell it. If I was thinking of doing that why would I post it on here for the world to see and clearly state it has been restored? Also its older than you think, 1930's not 1950's the larger palm pushes were made in the 1950's. The sign is over 80 years old, to find one in this condition is "almost impossible". Keep in mind there is many store owners that still display these old signs, but want them mint condition. In order to have signs this old in mint condition you can bet 9/10 were restored at one point in time.
Not sure why you think the history of the piece is gone? This item still has lots of history, just lost its unique antique character flaws. Imagine if this sign could talk LOL, it would have a couple stories to tell, how it was damaged over the years and now loved.
I agree, I do like to leave my signs original, I like them more showing their age and their flaws, but a small item like this that has been damage soo bad, most would not even buy it or even consider displaying it. So instead of seeing this sign go to waste, I gave it a new chance at life, it can now be enjoyed for 80 more years!
Another reason why some collectors are okay with restorations, is because total original mint condition items are very very pricey. When I went to pick up my palm press my buddy told me he knew were an original is that was an 9/10 condition, not mint but close to it. He told me the seller wanted over 600$ for it! I know these palm press are worth that, but a young collector like me can't afford to spend that much on one sign.
Restorations, give young collectors like me a chance to enjoy a minty condition sign without the high price tags. It cost me 20$ to buy the palm press at a local antique store, and 125$ to restore it. I was able to get myself a restored palm press for under 1/4 price an original would cost me.
Great item Trevor! You must pass on the contact info of the person who restored the item for you. You did what I would do. I try to get Coke signs that show the verbiage well, but if I can find an item as far gone as yours was, I too will have it restored.
My new Coke room is coming along. Looking forward to showing it off here next month.
