I am trying to fide out what kind of Jade this is I went on line and found this (Jadeite
A Valuable material for gem purposes (almost transparent emerald green stone are vary valuable) the larger, less transparent and color masses are widely used for carvings in China. Color is often spotty and sometimes present only as green seams in paler material with a spotty color pattern...
So is it Jadeite or Nephrite

From the picture, it appears to me to be jadeite over nephrite because a) a granular texture over fibrous (nephrite) and it has a more/shiny glassy sheen rather than oily (nephrite). Hope that helps!

      Thank you
I hope it is Jadeite and not Nephrite

      My pleasure!
Something to keep in mind if you begin collecting Chinese jade is not to consider nephrite of lower value. In fact most of the very oldest pieces are nephrite! :D
More important is to learn the quality of jade. You want to stay away from treated jades. Also familiarize yourself with the many stones that often get confused as jade.
Lastly if you want a good visual for the terms "oily" and "glassy/glossy ", look in my collection. You will see a nephrite plaque. That is oily. Then look at the white jade seal. That is glossy.
      Sincerely~

The stone of heaven as the Chinese call it. I love jade. Have you ever looked at it really, really closely? You can see small specks of sparkly things, almost like little stars shining up in the sky on a cloudless night. So fascinating. You are fortunate to have such a nice block of rough jade.

TeresaD--this is nephrite, not jadeite. The small dark spots, formation of the rough, coloring, etc. are consistent with nephrite. Looks to be possibly Wyoming material--and a very decent looking piece. Comments about the 'glassy sheen' are misleading here.
