The automatic farm gate patented by Joseph E. Stong, of Newton Brook, Ontario, Canada. Patent no. 141,900 dated August 19, 1873. The last photo is a model gate that sold at auction in 2005. Evidently two configurations of the gate were available, or an enterprising farmer simply re-worked the gate to suit his own idea. I restored the gate to allow both options by simply replacing the upper beam. My collection now includes a sample of each of the three Stong gate patents.
