At the moment I'm in the UK, while Christmas shopping I spotted this brooch. It reminds me very much of the Scorpion brooch in one of my earlier post. The Opals are crystal opal and are in a bezel setting, the eyes of the Spider are rubies, the colours in the opals are very pretty, the brooch is 9ct rose gold and it was made around 1900. The box is original to this piece which is a great plus.
    Many thanks for looking

I was wondering if any body knows what the loop is next to the hinge, I was thinking may be it's for a safety chain?
    5. shareurpassion shareurpassion, 9 years ago
It was probably a thin chain that attached one of the feet to the loop there.

Beautiful opal! Much desired design too!!!

On second look, it appears just to be the catch for the pin...

      Spiiideeer! Ooopaaal!!! Love it :-))
For the ring, it could be for a safety chain or a chain with a dangling fly! Google images for "spider fly brooch".
      Good shoping ;-)

I'm really getting completely confused about Opals, lol. Many thanks Kyra and racer for lovely comments and love.

Ha! Another link about opals (not Ethiopian opals, which are différents, don't be fooled...)

Many thanks Kyra for information. I brought the brooch has fresh water opal which I think is crystal opal.

I have put the brooch on a dark back ground, you can see though it.

I've recently bought a necklace, the case it came in is what a case should be, it's over a hundred years old but you can still smell the leather, lovely. I don't know which I like the best the necklace or the case.
