Needless to say, the incuse markings aren't as clear as they could have been, but it's still a nice gift to me from a friend.
Is this what is called a transposition insulator?

December of 1901 saw their company burn.
This piece was likely to have been made between April and December of 1901 as it has the squared-off applied-crown with no mold lines, which ended in early 1902, and has the April 1901 patent date. The glaze colour also matches perfectly.
As for its commonality, I dunno. :/
Gotta love those dated items.
But dates written do not mean much, I'm afraid, other than "earliest possible" (in some cases, items are dated a year before they're made, though. so.... LOL.)
