This is a letter of condolence from William Cooper Howells to my third great grandmother Rachel Jane Greene on the death of her husband J.H. Greene, dated June 24th 1890.

J.H. Greene grew up in the Howells household and apprenticed as a printer with W.C. Howells, the father of William Dean Howells, the famous literary realist author. Indeed Greene and the Howells family were lifelong friends. Long story here.

The photo of W.C. Howells is from my scan of a nearly faded to nothing CDV, which I have messed with endlessly in lightroom.

The photos of J.H. and Jane Greene are from CDV's dated 1863 and 1858 respectively and are likely copies of tintypes. Not sure.

You could get that analysed for character and personality by a Graphologist document examiner.

Hmmm, I suppose it would be a good subject for such analysis but for what reason other than curiosity?

I'm just happy the letter is one of the more legible of my 19th century correspondence.

      Hahahahaha
