A friend recently gave me this old first aid backpack for my skiing equipment collection (10"W, 4"D, 18"H). The bag has been in storage most of its life so the leather is in very good condition. It appears to be a early backpack because it has a horizontal wood dowel that both helps support the rigid skin frame and also attaches the flap and shoulder harnesses. Surprisingly, it also has two square pads for resting the arched backpack on the small of the back.

I tried unsuccessfully to translate what is stamped on the leather.

    "+ Sch Amutzner 44 Maienfeld "

Can anybody HELP me TRANSLATE, DETERMINE ITS COMPOSITION, AND DATE IT???

Surprisingly Collectors Weekly has ignored my request to include "skiing" as a sports category???

KeyWords: backpacks aka rucksacks, packsacks, or knapsacks 19th-century Norway and the “sekk med meis,” literally meaning “bag with a frame,” which was an animal-skin rucksack mounted on a narrow wooden frame.

      + Sch = Swiss
      A. Mutzner = The maker's name
44 Maienfeld = the municipality where the maker was/is, und possibly the model number or post code.

      Hope that helps somewhat.
