Hi everyone. Glass experts: Here's a large ewer decanter with applied handle, polished pontil, blown stopper. Not sure if stopper is original to the ewer. The handle has a flat wafer on top for one's thumb (I've never seen this exact feature before). I'm a "student of glass" ... here is what I'm wondering: what features DATE this item? I've compared many decanters online but come up with a wide range of dates! I'm confused. How old is this one and WHY? Are these panels CUT? then fire polished? is the handle pressed or blown (not sure)? I don't see mold seams. It seems like a QUALITY piece (maybe even exceptional)? Possibly made here in Pittsburgh? Thanks for your comments!!! This is fun. I love historic glass. Joey

I think its very nice, I am also a student of glass. It has a gound pontil on the bottom, with lots of nice wear to the base. I think this was pressed into a mold, then the lip was finished off, the handle looks applied. Then panel cut, the stopper may not be original. Is the inside ground for a stopper ? I think its at least Victorian.

Oh, and I think it might be a claret jug of some sort.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I'll check the grinding on the inside (when it's in hand) good point!

Your welcome, also I meant ground pontil, not gound pontil.
