Old Leather trunk. A.R. Pritchard of Rochester NY. It has old stamps that are barely noticeable but can make out a few words here and there. All the hardware is still functional. This must have been a very loved trunk. Now it lives in our home. My wife and I would love to know more about it.

This is an unusual sole leather trunk. Could we prevail upon you to post some pics of the interior? It is a very nice piece.

Thanks for the additional pics -- so the leather top slides off completely to reveal the base trunk inside? Very unusual design. Having the maker's label is a real plus -- so you are ahead on that front.
The earliest reference to A.R. Prichard that I can find is 1827 in a city directory Starting with small beginnings and specializing in sole leather trunks/valises.
A.R. Pritchards trunk depot was moved from 19 to 78 state street Rochester NY.
in June of 1851. It however was the starting point of another Famous Trunk maker. Henry Likly, served his apprenticeship straight out of high school graduation . It was here that he mastered his Trunk making trade. Jan. of 1868 Mr. Henry Likly was given a partnership
with the company. It was renamed A.R. Pritchard & Likly . Three years after it became a sole proprietorship ,eventually becoming Henry Likly an Co. This was the name in 1870 when A.R. Pritchard retired. In 1925 it became "Likly's" Located at 340 Lyell Ave. Rochester NY.
The factory covered over 2 full acres of land. the building was 4 stories tall and 60,000 square ft. At it's peak they used ver 1 million ft. of Lumber annually turning out over 30,000 trunks per year.Hope this sheds some light. Wonderful trunk and a hard label/lock to find.
