Inherited from my grandmothers estate. I'm guessing because of the size that this was a hatpin holder? There is a marking at the bottom of the piece, but I don't know the writing other than it's of Asian heritage. Any feedback is appreciated:)

Japanese - the characters say Nichi Hon, meaning Nippon, or Japan.
These marks date this to early 20thC.
