      gorgeous shelf! what kind of wood is it? why do you think Japanese and not Chinese [which would be my first guess]?

      The lady I bought it from mentioned Japanese. I am not sure of the type of wood... It's really light weight, and it's put together with small nails. It's quite sturdy too.

      this is probably not an bookcase (it is open at the side) but an japanese mingei shelf unit
