The ashtray(?) appears to be copper-plated and worn. Oxidation has occurred in two different forms. The 3 3/8" x 3" x 3/8" tray is fairly heavy for its size, 2 ounces. The relief stamp reads, "MADE IN JAPAN" and has the rising sun. Depicted on the tray is a relief of a dragon with some painted highlights. There is a lot of detail, but mostly covered by oxidation. Having a hard time dating this piece (late 1920s - early 1940s?). Any help is appreciated!

i'd say that's right. anytime between 1915 and 1945 was when 'Made in Japan' was used the first time around. then again after the 'Occupied Japan' in the mid 50s, i think.

Because it's small, maybe for a dipping sauce and because of the mark, it can be dated after 1921, or after 1952, before 1921 it would be Nippon, and between 1947-1952 Occupied Japan.
