Any help identifying what this animal character is would be much appreciated. It is 4 1/4" long and 3 1/2" tall and is cast iron. I think it is too small to be a doorstop so I suspect it is 1/2 of a pair of old bookends, but I have no idea what kind of mythical creature this is. Mascot? Caroon character? Please help. It is a four legged animal but it has a long beak or bill with what look like teeth. It is wearing what looks like some type of cap and has on boots with a lone star. It is completely unmarked.

I'm not looking for help identifying what the item itself is (I know it is a heavy cast iron bookend). It is the subject matter I can't identify. I'm looking for anyone who knows what this animal is supposed to be. Some kind of mascot or cartoon character is my guess, but I'd love to know what the animal is.
This bronze Peregrinus sculpture is one of a Limited Edition of just 100 pieces cast in 1978 (they were sold to raise money for a first year student loan fund). Peregrinus is the mascot of the University of Texas School of Law, created in 1901 by student Russell Savage who first drew it in response to a lecture by Professor William Stewart Simkins in his equity class on the Praetor Peregrinus of Roman Law. Shortly tafter the law students adopted Peregrinus as their mascot. The law students' arch rivals, the engineering students, destroyed an original image of Peregrinus; retailiation involving both schools and their mascots continues today
