2 Japanese metal boxes - lovely but not a clue what or who or when!

Well I picked these up this weekend at a boot sale from a guy who had hundreds of boxes going for next to nothing. If you knew what you were looking for there was likely lots of treasure there but as I have no idea of such things I just picked 3 that I liked the look of, 2 of which I have no idea what they are, who made them or when they were made.

They have lovely relief decoration, one of a ship and another of geese. The one with the geese is really nice with very attractive reliefs of bamboo and flowers around the edges. It is very heavy and initially thought it was brass but the inside of the lid is shiney and silver coloured so no idea what the materials are, same with the ship one. They both have Made in Japan to the base but the geese one also has what appears to be an 'a' in a diamond, but I can't find the mark anywhere.

Any info you can give me would be great.
