Railroad keyless lock that says PAT.APL'DFOR. HAS the numbers 124 on the inside of CHAMBER. Appears to be brass and steel with rivets but no key hole. The round part that says Patten turns back and forth but not round and round
so how was it used? sounds more like a greyhound bus invention!

That's likely a J. B. MILLER keyless click combination padlock. (JBMKL) Turn counterclockwise until dead stop to begin. Then the combination is either 3, 4, or 5 turns. It could be R-L-R or R-L-R-L or R-L-R-L-R. But clicks are counted instead of digits on the face. These locks are used by visually impaired individuals and can be opened in the dark by simply counting clicks. Miller sold to Gougler in 1945. Some combinations are more challenging to decode than others. 3 turn models are obviously easier than 5 turn models. Hypothetical examples are R5-L2-R6 or R2-L4-R1-L4 or R5-L1-R1-L4-R2.
