Tunbridge ware writing slope

I notice lots of my items are 20th century, so to balance things out a bit here is a proper antique.

This is a Tunbridge ware writing slope, dating to around 1880. It gets its name from the town of Tunbridge Wells in England where these boxes were made as tourist pieces for wealthy people visiting the spa town. The decoration on the front is made up of a mosaic of tiny pieces of wood inlaid into the body of the lid. I have not been able to identify the castle but it is probably a depiction of an actual castle, with a bit of artistic license thrown in.

This one opens up to reveal a writing slope for writing letters and contains space under the leather writing surface to store your papers and such. I just need a small inkwell now to complete it.

This is smaller than the average writing box so I suspect it was intended for travelling.
