    THIS LITTLE ASH SHOVEL IS CAST METAL. WEIGHS ABOUT 3 LBS. THE DATE IN THE HANDLE LOOKS TO BE 18-8 NOT SURE. NO MAKERS MARK.15 1/2 INCHES OVERALL LENGTH. UPON ON FURTHER INVESTIGATION THE NUMBERS ARE APPARENTLY 1626, I GUESS A MODEL NUMBER.

      I never saw an ash shovel without rounded sides to keep the ash from falling off. I sooner think it was used to put perhaps a bread pan in a bee hive oven etc. I have seen and restored a number of bee hive ovens and this is quite similar to implements I have seen folks have set beside it. Just my 2 cents.

      Frisco - I would say you are correct. The picture is so bad I couldn't see the rolled up edges. I downloaded the picture and changed it to a negative black and white and I can now see it more clearly.

      Fhrjr2, I know what you mean. Optical allusions and less than great eyesight can change things for me as well.
