    What is it ? It looks like a tapered dowel thing a ma gig. The bottom is machined to press against a lathe (maybe) you tell me.

      Appears to have a blade that could be for shaving dowels, but sure looks costly for that.

      I agree with blunderbuss2. It looks like a heavy-duty "hollow auger" with the advantage that there is no maximum length to the area to be reduced - you just keep moving it down the stock, making a dowel of any length.

      It looks to me like something that could be used to cut round 'tenons' (w/a square shoulder?) on the ends of other slender wooden things -- chair legs/spindles, stair banister parts, or stuff like that...?
