Just back from a short break in Bangkok away from the hustle and bustle of the lunar new year festivities in Malaysia. It was a nice break and always a great place to visit, apart from the horrendous traffic of course. I did a bit of digging and came across a place called ‘Papaya Vintage’ which is a prop house/flea market on the outskirts of the city. What a place, five floors and seemingly endless rooms packed to the gunnels with treasures to suit everyone’s taste. It’s so huge that they ask you take photos of the things you want then track down the proprietor, show him the photos and gives you a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on what you’ve chosen.
If ever any of you guys are over there, then I strongly urge you to visit the place. From what I could gather, they’re mainly a prop house, renting out their stuff to film companies, TV studios and photographers looking for period pieces needed in their productions. It struck me that the proprietor only sells things he has duplicates of, and given the enormous range of things there, I can understand why. I picked out seven ashtrays that caught my eye but he’d only sell five to me. Pity, but five is better than nothing.
I’m still in the process of cleaning them up, but I jumped the gun with this fabulous Heineken piece which I’d never come across before. It’s in perfect condition, the removable chrome ring is untarnished and the overall look is fabulous as far as I’m concerned. I was drawn to the base which is marked ‘Exclusive design for Heineken by Redbox’. I am really proud of it and am thrilled he’d let it go. A very worthwhile addition to my collection.
I’ll be adding the others when I’ve finished cleaning them up and have taken some photos.
I do hope you guys like this particular ashtray.

@keramikos - so that's the reason for the one 'cut-out'. Thanks for that information and glad you enjoyed the write up on Papaya. If ever anyone's in Bangkok, I recommend it immensely. Take plenty of cash though Cheap, it ain't!

@keramikos. 'Tis a puzzlement indeed. :) I thought the pipe rest idea was on the money until you raised the point about the star/notch muddle. Actually, having never smoked a pipe, I'm oblivious to the needs of a pipe smoker, especially the 'resting it somewhere' requirement part. So now we have an interesting line of thought to pursue. Why the single 'cut out'? Curiouser and curiouser...
      Thoughts anyone?

@keramikos. Hi buddy and thanks for taking the trouble to post such positive and interesting feedback on my ashtrays. The 'pipe-knocker' thing is quite intriguing and can only assume the logic is correct. I mean, why the raised part to stub out a ciggy? It doesn't really make such sense. It's funny but your comment on pipe smokers got me thinking and I asked myself, when was the last time I saw anyone smoking a pipe? It must have been years and years ago. When pipe smokers were more visible I always noticed the fact that they seemed so relaxed and at ease. Maybe pipe smoking had a positive effect we've never known about.
Thanks again, it's great to read your comments. :)

Apologies for my sweeping generalisation regarding pipe smokers, given you shared the information about your father. It was sloppy writing on my part. I should have qualified it and write the few pipe smokers I've ever seen, seemed contented folks.
Does anyone still smoke a pipe these days? I've a nasty feeling it was an older generational thing and that generation is rapidly disappearing.

Simonc... no need to apologize. I assure you we are not a dead generation nor is smoking a pipe a thing of the past. I speak of LEGAL smoking a pipe. As Charlie Rich sang....what goes on behind closed doors. I am willing to bet I have a pipe older than you are and it is mellow. Are you?
    6. Simonc Simonc, 5 years ago
Definitely mellow, in fact distinctly mellow yellow, my friend. :) Now about that pipe, was it made in 1960?
Nice mention of Mr Rich's classic, but now it's floating around my head, I'll be singing it all day...:)

Ha ha, not only is Charlie Rich floating round my head, it's jostling for space with Donovan and his flower-power anthem I alluded to above. It's going to be a great musical themed day.
      Have a great weekend.

Thanks for the tip. I've had a look and it's beyond superb. I love it. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Much appreciated. :)
