With picking slim these days for something different, I finally came across this 1880's - 1890's ? Trunk made by Rich Reed & Atwood from Boston Mass. Its not elaborate.....but a nice example non the less, in a body style I don't have and more so... it still had the makers label. I have seen this style with the typical rust colored canvas and brass buttons on the slats, with the typical metal handles on overseas trunks. But made in North America this style leans toward the more rare than common from what I see through research. It has a Brass Corbin Cabinet Lock Co., pressed steel slat clamps and with heavy thick steel three faced bottom corner bumpers, # 4 latches, extra nail work tweaked with some extra tin design accents. The bottom wheels are gone but there are remnants of the die-cast body that would have held these wheels. It measures 34" long x 26 tall x 20 deep. It has an unusual & fairly thick textured canvas or maybe duck cloth which can be seen in the #4 photos..I was hoping it was leather, but no. There is no interior tray, but was linen lined so was more of a quality oriented trunk. There's not to much on the internet for Rich Reed & Atwood trunks or the company operation time frame, so here's an addition to that short list of trunk images...

Thanks for the info Drill but for the life of me I can't get to read it. I went into how to use google books etc, tried from the start to call up the book sited by you to start as they suggest hoping that was the route but couldn't get that found either. Spent 40 minutes trying...I know most of the time it is the user that is at fault, but I can't get it to do what it is supposed to. Is it small enough to cut and paste here to read? Thanks for the effort its much appreciated, I was looking forward to reading something about the company as I found nothing.

Here is the link: the other previous one works when
I click on it. If not here is what it says on page 83 much luck things do post fun from time to time on CW!
It reads: from luggage and leather goods 1914, Atwood reed Co. The somerville trunk manufacturer, has closed up the business.the stock was sold to R.H.White co.
Cutter &Cutter bought materials while the machinery was disposed of to several local firms. Edward E. Reed has started the manufacturer of trunks in a small way
occupying a building near the old factory at 61 Gotham street. E.E. Atwood is now selling for Cutter & Cutter.

Hey Thanks Drill! Based upon that info I was able to go to Jims list and find a date at least. this helps me assume the 1880-1890 is in fact feasible. I gleaned these maker names and address with the latest under the Atwood name of 1907.
The Rich name I am not sure if it is the same Rich but he must have been hard to work with, judging by the partner turnover. ..lol

Here is a link to some early 1878 Boston advertising: Pgs. 156 & 157 It has advertising (names and addresses from all of the prevalent trunk makers in Boston at the time.
Chas Read was with Haley 14 Milk st. Boston at that time. These makers all did move around quite a bit. Fires ,Failures/ Bankruptcies etc. were a sign of the times
I agree with your stated time frame. I have seen the label a few times before.
