I bought this thinking it was a funky glass chain necklace. Upon closer inspection, it's a funky banded agate chain necklace. Especially that opaque brown stripe in the center of the third photo is telling this is stone and not glass. The agate does look coated or someway treated to me, because it has a peculiar glossy shine to it.

I found a similar necklace on RL: https://www.rubylane.com/item/844929-S2910/Vintage-Chunky-Dyed-Yellow-Agate-Bead . Same clasp and glossiness, but my necklace has spaced and smaller beads and doesn't appear dyed.

Thanks a bunch! I've not seen such a necklace before and had no point of reference. It's also not like any of my other Mexican jewelry, or like any of my other chain-type necklaces. There's an elegance to it few match.

This is 'Mexican onyx', a calcium based stone related to marble & alabaster & unrelated to true onyx, a form of chalcedony, which is a form of quartz & silicon based. The banding causes the confusion.
