This is a set of 4 Vaseline Glass (which is yellow) coasters made by Pairpoint Glass. I(t apparently commentates the 1984 anniversary of Piedmont College which began in 1897. Then there is the date 10971 under the image of the chapel. I was going to assume something but then I decided to just say it says 1971.
This was made by Pairpoint Glass which began in 1837 and is still around. Luckily the date is on the plate (it is a coaster but they call it a plate. It is 3 1/2" across. The makers mark is on each plate along with the engraver's mark. These can be used for coasters but they are mainly for display.
They are now in my Vaseline Glass cabinet. Vaseline glass from the 1800s to the present. The green glass is down below.

They are called cup plates because they go back to china made in England with no handle on the cups. Tea was at times sipped from the saucer and the cup was put on the table linen which created many a stain. That was when the cup plate came about. The cup was put on the cup plate and the person still drank tea from the saucer. Later on cups were made with handle. I don't know if I can find any literature on this but I used to work at Pairpoint from 1973 to 1988.
