Here I am again! So, this painting has been in my home for at least 70 years. Yeah, it took me a while to question it:) Anyway, it was my
parents and has been hanging on the wall all that time. I cannot figure out who the artist is and am not even sure I have the letters right
in his or her name. The first picture, I lightened up so you could see it better. The second picture is how it actually looks. The third pic
is the signature, and of course the last is the back. It appears to be an oil painting, it is old and the colors are dark. It was painted on a
canvas that was nailed to the wood. It is all original and still in the same frame. The nails look old. I also noticed, believe it or not, that
part of the oil painting that is mounted to the wood has part of the painting on it-I don't know if that was common then or not. I never
saw a painting with part of the painting adhered to the mount-perhaps it was common back in the day?? Anyway, considering my parents had an original civil war painting framed in the living room for years-you never know what this is. One day my mother took that
off the wall-it was huge and she wrapped it up to sell. She needed money for Christmas presents. I was little and we took the train to
NYC to a museum and they gave her $400.00 on the spot. We didn't know what it was and my mother was thrilled. That was in the
early 1960's. Everytime I see Antique Roadshow now-I could kick myself:) but who knew?? Only the experts back then. So maybe I will be lucky this time???

I believe the sail boats are called “feluccas”...they are age-old in design but commonly seen, even today, sailing the Nile.....so silently and gracefully....many times carrying a few travelers on a Nile adventure (such as myself, years ago).
The boat without sails looks like a freighter.
The scene could be in the Mediterranean Sea, near-shore to Egypt.
It’s a beautiful painting, mixing the ancient with the modern vessels, and that beautiful sunrise (or sunset) reflected in the almost still water....the lights on the vessels....so serene.
Or, perhaps that is the moon “rising” and not the sun...
A question: So the part of the canvas that wraps half way around the wood actually has part of the painting on it?
Perhaps the painting was sliced out of its original frame and then later reattached to this smaller stretcher to be reframed....such as “art-heist-type-canvas removal in a hurry....
It might be prudent to delve into that if I’m reading you right regarding the edges....just my “FBI” thoughts kicking in. :-)
I never thought of that, but one never knows. I think the letters on the bottom of the painting look like VEROLIU to me, but I don't know. Maybe someone can figure out
who this artist is?? Or is it VERDIU??

Veroli is a place in Italy. I don't know if there are docks there. From the map it looks like docks would be over in Lazio. So the question is: Could this be a painting of
Veroli and the artist's name is hidden under the frame? Could it be Carlo de Veroli?
There is also a Vera de Veroli? There is also a Joseph Mallord William Turner who
did alot of sunset/sunrise paintings. It is possible that this is from the 19th century, because my father was born in 1900 and it may have come from his house. So, it could be anything. Keep putting the thinking caps on-I need help figuring this one out:)
