I have no clue where the R comes from. I heard it could have been a pre 1979 prototype? Any one have a slight idea why there is an R engraved.

Possible that it's indicating a registered trademark. And possibly they weren't able to engraver stamp the circle.
The R symbol indicates that this word, phrase or logo is a registered trademark for the product or service.
