Just looking to learn some history on this chess set I’ve had since I was a child. It was gifted to me by my great grandfather, but I never really knew much about it. I’d love some clarity on the item I’ve kept all these years.

i am total nitwit in this although i collect chess boards, so i probably talk complete bs i am so bad in this, it took me quite a lot of time to determine if it was chinese or japanese

the pagoda,s ( japanese or chinese squared non squared ground plane ) could be judged by ground plane , but they standarised it

so the pagoda is the chess castle
next to it is a rather elaborate horse rider , which could explain the quality it is good enough , but it is not top notch , the better are ivory and riding a qilin scene

i try to judge this by means of headgear of the emporer in combination with the bishops IMO i wander if it standing sages ( Chuánshu?) or dignatary councillars , it aren,t guards

you have to rotate the board the empress is on the wrong square, the white pieces got a dark square on the left

are the pawns still the army , i think so

board is proably mother of pearle . i like the board better then the pieces , the board i don,t know but it does, not look 19 century to me

Welcome to CW. Yeah, no appraisals on this site, it is just for collectors sharing their collections.

There is an APPRAISAL link at the top of every page on here but BEWARE, the quality of their appraisals is NOT worth $30. When it was just Barnaby's it was $20 and worth it but this new group working for them isn't even close to being appraisers. I got 3 appraisals on an item, two were in the hundreds of dollars and the one from here was $75 to $85 and came in way after the date promised. I did get a refund and stated my issue. I would never use them again
