Yes, definitely appears to be French.

It’s hard to tell from the photos but I wonder if the paper is vellum. The only word I can really make out at the top is “flowers” - please let us know if you get any of it translated!

There is a date there or two actually. They relate to the fifteenth and the eighteenth of December 1696.

On the signature page there are the place names Moyemont and Romont, both in Vosges, France
    9. vetraio50 vetraio50, 2 years ago
On the reverse of the document we have :
"Pour le Sieur Claude Henry Chastelain
      Et Patricien a Romont
      Contre
      Sieurs Fleurent, Colin & Joseph
      Thonnenot habitants de Moyemont

As MMNJ says Moyemont - Romont are in the Vosges. In fact another place mentioned Rambervillers is also on the D 32 these days : Moyemont - Romont - Rambervillers - a total distance of just 8.5 km (or 5.25 miles).

On the reverse we have 'acquch' should be an abbreviation of 'acquisition'. A purchase agreement ???

Y'all are really making some progress on this. :-)

I could tell it was French, but because I don't speak it myself, I didn't have any confidence that I could properly transcribe much of it.

However, a Google Translate reading of one of vetraio50's transcriptions suggests to me that this might be some kind of dispute, "Contre" translating to "Against":

      For Mr. Claude Henry Chastelain
      And Patrician in Romont
      Against
      Misters Fleurent, Colin & Joseph
      Thonnenot inhabitants of Moyemont

      Or am I completely off-base?
