This was given to me by an elderly friend who was going through some of her father’s things. Amazed to find that it still has its original, untouched soap puck which is protected under the unopened cellophane seal, as well as the bold, pristine graphics that are often worn or faded.
Around 1948, Old Spice began working with Wheaton Glass Company (Millville, New Jersey) to produce molded glass shave mugs such as this. These glass mugs are similar to opal glass, but are manufactured in a clay color with a luster very close to pottery. Developing this glass required several months of research and several thousand dollars to determine the right blend of ceramic materials to give a realistic pottery appearance. Nice. I have several of these. My favorite shaving mug. I have one in each of the bathrooms where I shave. I use Van Der Hagen shaving soap.
I do have one old Hazel Atlas shaving mug....
Reminds me of custard glass....
