Could anyone please help me identifying this bronze guy?
I bought in auction this little bronze bust of an unidentified gentleman wearing a peculiar outfit, simply for the base. It is made of Egyptian Imperial Porphyry, arguably one of the most glamourous stones on earth, as for centuries it was reserved for Roman emperors' exclusive use, due to its unique purple colour (the purple of power!). Now, I wonder about the identity of the smiling character.
The bust seems to come from 19th century France (?) and the guy must have been a very prominent person in his field, as reflected by the use of such rare and expensive material for the base of his portrait.
Would be truly grateful for any hint throwing a bit of light in my quest for finding out who the good smiling man could be.
Cheers!

Pierrot a character in Commedia dell'arte. He is most often associated with Columbine. This is a universal story of love not returned. I see in this interpretation he has an Italian kind of hat, which makes perfect sense.
Cheers PhilDMorris. That's a good point, but I doubt he is Pierrot quite a lot. Firstly, my guy seems a rather old man, while Pierrot is usually depicted as a young man. Also, my guy's appearance in somehow different to Pierrot's comical one. My guy's expression seems rather serious and respectable. And then, I guess the flower-like ornament with tassels in my guy's hat speaks by itself of his provenance and identity... to those who know (sadly not me!). I assume my guy is some sort of academician, writer, university rector or something like that. Where from? No clue. What's his name? No idea. The mystery goes on...
