    1900's Calipers

    Manufacturer: P. Lowentraut
    Newark, NJ.
    1911-1919

I often buy things on instinct and look at them closer later. This was the case today. Garage sale find for $1. I knew they were old and in good shape. These Calipers had a little pitting and rust, so after cleaning them up some I could read the name clearly. What caught my attention right away was the "Made in America". The T at the end of the name was not stamped very good and is barely visible.

    "Made in America" 1911-1920
P.Lowentraut "begun his manufacturing business in 1869(previously a lager beer maker and liquor seller), and continued in operation at a number of Newark locations until sometime between 1911 and 1920. He employed about 125 men in 1890.

The last mention of Lowentraut is an estate sale around 1919.

Here's a link to some P. Lowentraut history. Has great pictures of various tools they manufactured.
