This poster uses artwork by the artist Peter Kennard for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). This version was published by the Labour Party in 1981 who were opposed to the conservative governments plans to allow the US to station nuclear missiles in Britain. It uses John Constable’s 1821 painting The Hay Wain, adapted with a battery of cruise missiles and a rather scary looking soldier looking back at the viewer. The famous work by constable was chosen to reflect the rural location of Royal Air Force Lakenheath in Suffolk that was used as a U.S. Air Force base and the plans to site 110 U.S. nuclear bombs there. Picture 3 shows constable's original.
