A beautiful period painting of a Wesleyan Methodist preacher dating to the Early 19th Century.
Age- c1820
Size- 10.5 by 9 inches including frame.
Medium- Oil on panel.
The back of the painting states: "Dr. Dean's Family."
The label on the back if the painting is from the 1820s. The supplier of the panel was as follows:
Thomas Brown, 163 High Holborn, London 1805/6-1853, 260 Oxford St (‘Hyde Park end’) 1853-1854. Artists’ colourman
There is an interesting print online that shows the shop with a horse-drawn wagon parked outside with the name of Brown's business. Apparently, he supplied many famous artists with panels, paints etc. His son took over the business after his death.
From the seller:
Yes, I can tell you this lovely piece came from a very good source. Back in the 1940’s to 1970’s there was an Essex auctioneer called Harry Reeman who not only sold many local estates at the time but was also an avid collector. He would have no problem bidding against his own clients to buy something that took his fancy, often to the dismay of his staff!!
Anyway, it came from his extensive collection.
