Though stained glass had been used in churches since the first millennium AD, it fell out of fashion as the Gothic era ended in the 15th century. A revival in England and America in the mid-1800s led by artists like Tiffany and La Farge sparked a wave of innovation, and the substitution of copper for lead to separate the pieces made the medium more durable and easy to work with. Stained glass became popular for window murals, lamp shades, and table tops, though consumer interest waned again in the mid 20th century.
