This was kind of a headspinner. the catalina is thick and chunky and the batchelder is thin as an eggshell and weighs nothing. normally, batchelder is very thick and chunky and catalina is thin and elegant.

You probably know this but the Catalina was produced by Gladding McBean, not Catalina Island pottery.
It's been my experience that Batchelder pieces run the gamut, but he operated a couple of different companies. His tiles tended to be a bit clunky but his later Batchelder Ceramics pieces (influenced by William Manker's items and success) are much more refined, thin-walled and delicate. Your piece was likely produced by Batchelder Cermics of Pasadena circa the 1940s.
