    Found this test accidentally :-D

Internet is not very clear about it, but I think it is an easy trick, at least to sort glass or garnets from ruby variety of corundum!

You can see how the clasp of my chrysoprase necklace react! I knew these red stones weren't natural rubies, but thought they were paste stones. SYNTHETIC RUBIES!

For the butterfly, an old spare piece in wait of proper use, you can see all red stones aren't rubies: those which don't react to UV are garnets, others are natural rubies (I know that from the era of the piece and the cut of stones!)

A side view of a butterfly pin is quite rare to see, I love that. x0

Nearly all rubies, natural or synthetic fluoresce...
      Garnets don't!

      To make it short:

if it fluoresce: ruby (natural or synthetic)

Not fluoresce: glass, garnets, paste, some African rubies.

Thank you for your question and love, Amatoor :-)

Phil, hi! Yes, you rather see them flat open wings, it had to be you to notice that :-D
      Thank you, XO too!

Kath, my pleasure :-) UV light shows restorations too!
I even realise some of my old/antique diamonds fluoresce in green or orange!
Run to Google and.... right, weird but true :-D

Huh, that's interesting. I knew black light worked for ivory, but stones, too? The things we learn on Google! :)

Very interesting to know, thanks. I let you know that I cannot react as many as I did before because my husband have heard the news suffering from liver cancer and no cure available. So I visit whenever it's possible!
