I haven't seen one like this before and have nothing to compare it to, so here it is. I bought it last year at a flea market for two bucks. The frame itself is wood. The inside is velour. I imagine that is supposed to be a flower on the top, but the separation of the bloom from the leaves is a bit odd. Nothing like this appears on Google Images.

Perhaps a sewing box? The ladies hat boxes I've seen (I admit mainly in movies and t.v.) are usually a heavy cardboard.
OGF - the height is 5.5 inches, and the diagonal measurement is 8.5 inches across. I have added photos of the hardware.
