In 1781, during the Amer. Revolution, Rodney split his fleet, sending part to the Chesapeake I part to take the Island of St. Eustatius, which was a main supply point for the Revolution, being Dutch & neutral. (I owned the 300+ yr old house that was his HQ) He also took the Islands of St. Maarten & Saba. While he was in the Caribbean, his partial fleet up north was defeated by the French & Cornwallis was forced to surrender. These medallions were made to honour his capture of the Islands, but probably before it was realized that he lost the war in the Colonies because of his greed in the caribes. There is an original medallion here in SXM & a jeweler friend was able to borrow it to make a few wax castings. This is one of those. The reverse is a scene of the capture of St. Eustatius (Statia locally). Statia has surrendered 22 times in history and it is only in recent years that they became aware that their Island flag was not all white. LOL ! A very interesting period that you might want to study. I'm giving mine to the museum in SXM.
Interesting,.. don't know much about the VA Capes had to look it up ...must be a northern thing ...smiling,.. but Interesting

It's an interesting history. It's only briefly mentioned that Rodney didn't show up with the other half of the Limey fleet. In those days, captures were divided between officers, king & crews. Rodney sat in my house for about 8 mos. instead of sailing for the Chesapeake to join the rest of the fleet. He had Statia stripped bare, even selling the roofs off of warehouses. Many Brits from St. Kitts, Antigua, Nevis etc. were selling war supplies in Statia with full knowledge that it was being sent to the Rebels. Rodney was just as guilty because he was stuffing his pockets as well instead of doing his job of sailing to help his original command. He died in poverty. All inhabitants of Statia were deported & therefore there is buried treasures all over. Metal detectors or not allowed & I couldn't even use mine on my own property. Treasure pots are uncovered from time to time & secreted off Island. The French actually won the Amer. Revolution and they aren't given credit due in Amer. history & the Colonies soon became buddy buddy with the Brits.. In my opinion, that is the basic reason for French animosity toward Americans. Just my opinion, based on study of history. Roy, I'm glad you showed enough interest to dig into this history. It's all around me !
Lol I as well ..smiling I have a few books on the subject somewhere in my hoard of 3 0r 4 thousand books kicking around the house oh my ... cause I love of history ..and political science. but never get a chance to talk to others about it do to the fact most people don't read anymore.. and by the time I find someone with the same interest I forgot most of it by not talking about it ...tell me that's not crazy .. lmao.. enjoy the day bud,.. got 2 feet of snow coming Saturday night , now I have to go fill my 30,.. 1 gallon jugs with water ..for when we lose power to the 40 to 50 mile hour wind gust they say is coming with it as well as the temps dropping 10 to 15 below ., send help ...lol... ....later .
Hey Roy, you chose to live there ! LOL ! Yankees "ain't got no sense". CW doesn't want us FB'ing, so my email is on my profile & I have a U.S. Vonage #. Meanwhile, stay out of the cold.
After all that they name a battleship after him, one that turned the Bismarck into swiss cheese.
I didn't know about CW not liking us to FB. I leave comments when my post make CW FB.
CW "reprimanded" me once or twice, long ago, when things really got off of the subject. Guess they have a point when things take off on a diff. thread.
I'll behave ..less bandwidth from me....'-))
very interesting bb2. thanks
CW "reprimanded" me once or twice, long ago, when things really got off of the subject. )))))) lol you never been on the subject ...smiling beside that was 4 or 5 years ago when we threw rocks at each other and had a room of 3 to 4 hundred great folks posting and playing in here ..what happen ..lol... got to dry...later bud

Yeah, another era/error on CW. Did you catch the topless pic I posted of Whacky Jacky pouring beer into a glass and asking, "Can anybody identify this bottle ?". Staff caught it & deleted in about 10 mins., but not before I got about 8 replies. None mentioned the bottle ! LMFAO !! Never did figure why I wasn't banned for that one. Proving CW staff has a sense of humour. I'm going to be a fireman when I grow up !
That's badass Lucas!!!
Hey Nick, been meaning to call.
Very cool,I also keep coins when I think they have errors or are different. It's just very hard to research today's coins lol.
So, my turn to chime in here!!! ;) This is really a great post, do you have pics of the house Lucas??? I would love to see that when you were occupying it. That's just amazing in and of itself. Any Roy was right about people not reading much these days, although my daughter is a definite book worm and I only know a couple more that are. I for 1 am not and in my high school years, I was way to busy learning what exactly ganja was, so the mems aren't quite the things history would actually stick to! haha Although, after a good period of time I did take a college course on medical coding and much to my surprise, was a straight A student. I attribute that to a little knowledge of cars and some from simple common sense. For instance, tachycardia. I knew cardia was about the heart and I knew a tachometer was to measure the speed of a car, therefore... tachycardia = fast heartbeat! And there you have it ;)
As far as the rock throwing scene, I was here then as well but had taken a little break when the boulders flew! But you can be sure I heard about it! Geeze, it's just a forum, like I said before, CW is lucky the old crew, as small as it is now, is still here. I miss those days. Love you guys ta bits!!!
I'
Share, I don't know if I have any pix of the house except when it was on the phone book cover for Statia, St. Maarten & Saba. That was pre-digital & a loot of hurricanes have passed under the bridge since. I'll have to do some digging. Did just stumble on a brochure on it, as the museum now, listing me as one of the owners.
