The finest Cameo I have ever owned and my favourite subject the mythological Medusa.
This Superb Cameo originated from Italy and is a superb example of Victorian Grand Tour Jewelry. A lady doing her classical tour of the famous Italian sights probably acquired this somewhere like Rome in the late 1800s.
The Cameo is master carved a similar example by Saulini is in the British Museum Collection. The Gorgon Medusa although a very classical image gained new popularity in the Victorian Era, wherein she became softer gentler and more of a femme fatale. This beautiful example has a serene repentant expression on her face below the writhing and winged serpents in her hair and tied round her neck.
The cameo was mounted in a brooch setting of finely engraved high carat gold frame in the style of entwined ribbons.
A fabulous Rare piece of Grand Tour Cameo jewelry.
NB. this item was part of my past collection and is not available for sale.
