The View-Master was introduced at the New York World's Fair in 1939, intended as a 3D alternative to the scenic postcard, rather than as a child's toy. It was invented by an organ maker and photographer named William Gruber who wanted to update the old-fashioned stereoscope using newly available Kodachrome film.
