Just got it today...............Its 8" long, 5" wide and 2 1/4" tall. Looks funkey but untouched condition. Some kind of bent wood , bottom was held in place with wooden pegs, but is loose now. Has some design engraved on the top. Can anyone identify it? I like it a lot.
That's just a great old primitive box, I would guess early 1800's maybe earlier. You think it could have been a cheese box?
The paint is great. Great early country piece.
I think its a tine "tina box", or svepask. what ever that means.
They call these boxes shakers. It's a technique of heating and bending of the wood.
My uncle used to make them. I'm not sure about simple, but they were pegged that because they thought the Shakers perfected the method, but that is disputed.
How old to you think it is?

I know exactly what this is. The box is a Sandinavian traditional bentwood box. I have one that is the same shape, size and color. Mine belonged to my great grandmother. She came over from Norway with it in the 1870s. I have seen a number of them since and they are all made the same way. I would guess your box is at least mid 19th century and perhaps older.
