Garage sale find for 20 bucks. After a little tightening and oiling, we're trying to decide if we should rehab it or leave it as is.

It's my guess that it's probably from the 30's or 40's, made by the Sikes company, but the name and data plate on the back is missing. It is made entirely of a hard wood (I think Mahogany or walnut) The paint patina is cool but definitely gives it a rustic look.

I found this picture on line of a Sikes chair in original condition. Doesn't the wood look amazing! I'M TORN!!!!

HELP... Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If it were 19th century milk paint to an antique, I'd say leave it.

I am not a fan of worn paint or modern distressed. I say strip and restore it to the original wood.

MAY have lead paint-- I wouldn't eat it!

The paint does not look like era of the chair-- probably done in the last 30 years or so, so just as likely lead free paint (post US regulations).

I have never been accused of being "stylish", so go with the natural wood!

rustic white is pretty hip, but I say go back to the beautiful wood! :)

I seriously doubt this has milk paint on it. Lead base is certainly a possibility. I would test it and see. Paint stripper won't remove milk paint. Only ammonia will dissolve real milk paint. I would use care in stripping it (I would certainly strip it). Paint remover will also eat away glue used years ago. I tend to think I would use a spray remover if it isn't milk paint. I think 1930's is being quite generous for the age but it could very well be.
