This rocking chair belonged to my great grandfather. I know it is black walnut. I've seen one with ladies in conversation on the back and also one in which the back is shorter and not as decorative. My brothers and I used to roll marbles around the groove in the seat when we were young. My father promised it to me when I was very young and I have it in my home now. He passed away November and I'm very interested in the history of these chairs. His grandfather lived in Ohio, but originally from Canada. His father came to Canada from Scotland. It was very special to my dad.
    Thanks for any information.

I came across your chair posted here while searching for quarter sawn oak chairs. I believe your chair was made in the early 1900's by the George Arndt Chair Company, Dansville, New York. It has the same style/design as many that were made there. Many of the chairs depicted monks carved in the backs. Here is a link to an identical chair with a retriever and bird carved in the back. I am from Dansville and have a carved back rocker with a man reaching over a fence with a chicken in his hand carved out of oak.
